September 2005 Idea of the Month

Brag Book

The basic format for this adorable book was shared by fellow consultant, Ginni Candelaria.  I made my brag book using the September Stamp of the Month, C1213 Punkin' Carving.  Just follow the easy instructions below to make your own.

(1) Colored Cardstock piece 2.5” x 4.5”- this piece is the spine of the book

(3) Colored Cardstock pieces 3.25” x 3.75”

(2) Colored Cardstock pieces 2.25” x 1.75”

(6) Background/Texture paper pieces 4.5” x 12”

(2) Background/Texture paper pieces 3” x 3.5”

(1) Vellum piece 6” x 9” (plain or printed)

(2) White pieces 2” x 1.5”

(1) White piece 3” x 3.5”

19” Ribbon

Assorted buttons, spiral clips and/or brads

Step 1:  Create the Basic Pages

Create 6 pages for your book using the (6) 4.5” x 12” pieces of Background/Texture paper and 6 of the 1” x 9 and 1/8” cardstock strips (actually, you will be making 4 pages, and the other 2 will be the front and back covers).  For each page, fold a Background/Texture paper in half to form a 4.5” x 6” page (with the pattern on the outside!); apply adhesive to the inside to glue it completely shut.  Tear 1/8” from the long edge of a cardstock strip.  Fold the strip in half and wrap it around the short edge of your page, gluing it in place.  The torn edge should be towards the inside of the page as shown.  It doesn’t matter if you wrap the strip around the folded end or the “not folded” end of the strip, though I wrapped mine around the “not folded” end.  Repeat this process with the remaining pages.

Step 2: Create the Vellum Pocket Page

For this page, use the vellum piece and the final cardstock strip.  Fold the vellum in half to form a 4.5” x 6” page, BUT DO NOT GLUE COMPLETELY SHUT. Apply a strip of adhesive only along the two short ends to form a pocket.  Don’t worry if your adhesive shows through… on one end you will cover it up with a torn cardstock strip (as you did with the basic pages), and the other end will be hidden by the spine.

Step 3:  Create Photo Mats and Stamped Accents

Adhere the (2) 3” x 3.5” Background/Texture paper pieces to the 2 of the 3.25” x 3.75” Cardstock pieces. These will be photo mats and can be placed on any page in the book.  Stamp the 3” x 3.5” white piece as desired and mount onto the remaining 3.25” x 3.75” Cardstock piece; mount onto the cover.  Stamp the (2) small white Cardstock rectangles as desired, mount onto the (2) 2.25” x 1.75” Cardstock pieces; mount these onto any  of the pages in your book.

Step 4:  Assemble the Book and Embellish

Fold the 2.5” x 4.5” piece of Cardstock in half lengthwise to form the spine of the book.  Tear off a tiny bit along each of the long edges (refer to photo on the other side of this instruction sheet).  Stack all of the pages and wrap the spine around them.  Punch 2 holes through the spine and all the pages.  Tie the book closed with ribbon.  Use buttons, spiral clips and/or brads or other items to embellish your pages.  Here are some sample pages:
