Idea of the Month Foil Sheets
You can make your own metallic embellishments, tags, and more with foil sheets! They are fun and easy to use. Close To My Heart offers both gold and silver sheets, but you'll get more versatility if you order the gold sheets, which are actually gold on one side and silver on the other. Foil sheets can be embossed using stencils... OR you can even use a stamp if you follow the instructions below. Bonus: read on to find out how to use nail polish remover to get the 2-tone look shown on the snowman in the card below!
Supplies: Stamps and papers of your choice Black ink 1784 Gold Foil Sheets Z607 Embossing Tool or stylus Nail Polish Remover Cotton Swabs
Step 1: Stamp your image (NOTE: These instructions assume you are a) using our Gold Foil sheets which are actually gold on one side and silver on the other, and b) using a stamp to create your design instead of a stencil.) Stamp your image in black ink on the silver side of the foil sheet. If you are using a dye-based ink, the image will be faint but still usable (you just need to see it well enough to trace it); the image will be darker if you use a permanent or fabric ink. Step 2: Emboss your image Place the foil sheet stamped-side-up onto a cushy surface like a mouse pad or a thick pad of paper. Using the smallest end of an embossing tool or stylus, carefully trace over the stamped lines. Turn the foil over and voila!... a beautifully embossed image! If you wish, carefully go around the image again with the small end of the stylus, just outside the lines. This will make the image "pop out" even more. Step 3: Create a 2-tone effect on the foil (optional) If you wish, you can remove parts of the image with nail polish remover. Just dip a cotton swab in nail polish remover and carefully rub it over the foil in the desired areas. The polish remover will remove the gold layer, revealing the silver underneath. This is a beautiful effect! It looks best if you do not rub over the raised lines so that they remain gold for some contrast. Then just mount your image. I like to use matching silver or gold brads or eyelets. Have fun!
