Scrapbooking Heritage or Antique Photos- Idea #1

Older, antique, or heritage photos can be a challenge to scrapbook for a number of reasons, including that they are usually one-of-a-kind (ie: you don't have the negatives so you don't want to ruin them!), and are either black-and-white or have that sepia (brownish) tint to them.  This month, I want to share some ideas for scrapping older photos with the sepia tint.

This layout  is a picture of my Mom at her confirmation when she was 13 years old.  It's a beautiful photo, but definitely sepia tinted.  With these types of photos, the standard white page is just too stark.  I've found that using off-white cardstock (such as the Close To My Heart® Colonial White Cardstock shown above), is a better choice.  Another color that works beautifully is our Close To My Heart® Desert Sand Cardstock and/or Background/Texture Paper.  Desert Sand is the other color I've used.  We also offer our Victorian Fleur des Jardines Background/Texture papers in this color, which would be very elegant for a  heritage layout.

Another idea is to "age" your white or off-white cardstock by sponging on ink.  In my layout, I wanted to use a paper doily as one of the mats, but the doily was white.  To "soften" and "age" the doily, I simply sponged on Close To My Heart® Exclusive Ink TM in Desert Sand.

Finally, notice a couple "extra" details that are very simple to do.  First, the Slot Corner Punch was used to accent the corners of the tan cardstock.  (By the way, using the Slot Corner Punch is a great way to mount your photos without putting adhesive on these one-of-a-kind pictures.  Simply cut your mat 1/2" larger than your photo, punch the corners of the mat, and weave the corners of your photo into the slots to secure it).  And second, notice the gold photo corners.  This is a simple layout, but I thought it turned out beautifully!
