Idea of the Month Cinnamon Ornaments
These fragrant ornaments are fun and easy to make! Hang from your tree, or use them to adorn a holiday gift package. Be sure to plan ahead, though, as they take about 3 days to dry before you can decorate them.
Step 1: Make the Cinnamon Ornaments Ingredients: ¾ - 1 cup Applesauce Almost 1 cup Cinnamon Directions: Mixing with a fork and starting with ¾ cup applesauce, add a little bit of cinnamon at a time until well blended. Roll a small amount of the mixture between wax paper until the dough is about ¼ inch thick. Cut the dough into shapes with cookie cutters. With cookie cutters still in dough, peel away excess. Make a small hole in the top of the ornament for a ribbon hanger (I used a plastic straw). Leave on wax paper and place on a wire rack to dry. Turn over after about one day, removing wax paper. A good place to dry these is on top of your stove where it is warm. It will take several days for the ornaments to completely dry. Makes: a lot (quantity will vary with the size of ornaments) I made 18 – 2” round ornaments from this batch.
Step 2: Decorate You can write on the ornaments with a metallic pen, or stamp on them they are fully dry. I used white acrylic craft paint in the little bottles you can find at your local craft store. I had great success using a foam paint brush: dip the brush into the paint and wipe off the excess. It is important that you don't get too much paint on the brush! Tap the brush gently onto your stamp, and then stamp the ornament. The ornaments might not be completely flat on top, so it helps to gently roll the stamp a bit to be sure that all areas get stamped. Let the paint dry. Tie a ribbon through the hole for hanging.
